Boston is one of the most spiritually disconnected cities in America. With 41% of the population identifying as religiously unaffiliated, many people live without any connection to a church or the hope of the gospel. The city’s academic culture, fast-paced lifestyle, and the decline of historic Christian roots have left many searching for meaning but disconnected from faith. The people are being distracted by the pursuit of wealth and success, leading them to forget about their Father. Boston is a mission field filled with students, young professionals, and families who desperately need to encounter the love and truth of Jesus.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…” -Hebrews 12:1-2
Over Christmas break in 2024, I had the opportunity to spend a week in the incredible city of Boston on a short-term mission trip. My home church, First Baptist Opelika sent a team to walk alongside our partners at Life Community Church in Boston to support their ministry. For the past several years, our church has been sending both winter and summer teams to serve alongside them. This particular winter trip was focused on vision casting and building momentum for Next Gen Boston through Send Network, an initiative dedicated to planting churches and equipping leaders to reach the city with the Gospel. It was an amazing experience. My team and I saw firsthand the deep spiritual need in a city where churches are few and the Gospel is often unfamiliar. We also learned more about Send Network’s strategies for reaching Boston, planting healthy churches, raising up leaders, and mobilizing believers to live on mission in one of the most influential cities in America.
